  • Why Not Be a Deacon? | Scivias: Episode 14

From the earliest days of the Church, deacons have performed an essential ministry. They are often called the left and right hands of the Bishop, and they reveal Christ’s love especially through service. You want to serve the Church, but you also want to get married and have kids: Is God calling you to be a deacon? Maybe, but you’re not married yet, and God is speaking to your heart now. You can’t become a married deacon if you’re not married first. The life of a deacon is demanding, and so his wife and family should be involved in his discernment and decision. If God is calling you to marriage, go be a holy husband and father and discern the diaconate later down the road. “Scivias: Know the Ways of the Lord,” is a vocational discernment series produced by the Archdiocese of Boston Vocations Office. • Conflicting Desires | Scivias: Episode 13

"What should I do if I'm attracted to the priesthood AND marriage?" This question comes up very often when men are discerning the priesthood. First and foremost, a priest is a human being—a man—with all the same needs and desires as other men. It’s normal and healthy for a man called to the priesthood to experience a desire for marriage and children. In fact, if a man didn’t have the love, capacity for, and some desire to be a husband and father, that might be problematic. But not every man has a desire to be a priest, celebrate the Sacraments, and so on and so forth. So if a man does have those attractions, he should take his discernment of consecrated life very seriously, even if he also has a desire for marriage. “Scivias: Know the Ways of the Lord,” is a vocational discernment series produced by the Archdiocese of Boston Vocations Office.
