What’s the deal with these robes that priests wear for Mass? Why not just a suit or a cassock?
All these garments are actually trying to tell you something…
First is the AMICE. This small cloth represents the “Helmet of salvation” (Ephesians 6:17) and spiritual protection.
Second is the ALB. This white garment reminds us of our baptismal purity, and refers back to what Christ wore standing before Pilate.
Next is the CINCTURE. This cord worn at the waist reminds us of chastity to which we are all called, and readiness to serve.
After this is the STOLE. This long strip symbolizes the “yoke of Christ” that we bear in dispensing the Sacraments to those we serve.
Finally, over everything, we wear the CHASUBLE, a word that means ‘little house.” As the outermost vestment which covers all, the chasuble symbolizes Christian charity, which should cover all else. (Colossians 3:14)
So here’s the point: these vestments all convey a theological aspect of Jesus Christ. By wearing them, we are visually communicating that the priest is acting in persona Christi, that is, in the person of Christ, at the altar during Mass. It is not by our own power that the bread and wine becomes the Body and Blood of Christ, and that the other Sacraments are effective, but by the power of Christ, who is High Priest and King of Kings.
