  • Praying with Art | St. Joseph Reading Scripture with Jesus

In this episode of "Visio Divina: Praying with Art," host Katie Weiss guides viewers through a meditation on a painting of St. Joseph and a young Jesus reading Scripture together. Though this scene is not explicitly found in the Bible, "Saint Joseph with Child" by Sofia Novelli is a lovely piece of art that can help us enter into the ordinary life of the Holy Family and imagine what it was like to be there. Sofia Novelli is a contemporary Italian fine artist. She currently works as a commissioned painter and as painting assistant at the Sacred Art School of Florence. Visio Divina, translated from Latin to “divine seeing,” is a form of prayer in which one meditates on sacred art. In this new CatholicTV YouTube series, host Katie Weiss will guide viewers through the steps of Visio Divina for 7 pieces of sacred art depicting themes from the life of the Holy Family. If you'd like to pray along with a physical copy of the image and scripture, you can print out a PDF here: www.catholictv.org/resources/St. Joseph Reading Scripture.pdf Scripture: "When Jesus finished these parables, he went away from there. He came to his native place and taught the people in their synagogue. They were astonished and said, 'Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds? Is he not the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother named Mary and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? Are not his sisters all with us? Where did this man get all this?' And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, 'A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and in his own house.' And he did not work many mighty deeds there because of their lack of faith." -Matthew 13:54-58 Reflection Questions: 1. Place yourself in this image and Scripture. What is the Lord saying to you? 2. Imagine the humility required of Joseph to be in the presence of the Son of God and to teach him. Talk to Jesus about this and ask Him for the gift of true humility. 3. Jesus is present to Joseph in the midst of very ordinary experiences. How is Jesus becoming present in your everyday moments? 4. How can you live out the fruits of this meditation?
