SOUTH BOSTON-- South Boston Catholic Academy announced Feb. 6 that Nancy D. Carr has been appointed principal of the newly formed Catholic school set to open in September 2009.

Carr currently serves as Principal at St. Brigid School. In December 2008 it was announced that a new Catholic school will be established in South Boston to open in September 2009, to provide for the needs of the students currently attending Gate of Heaven School and St. Brigid School

In making the principal’s announcement, Father Robert E. Casey, Pastor at Gate of Heaven Parish and St. Brigid Parish said Carr is an established leader in the education community.

“She is anxious to help lead us through the merging of our two schools over the next six months as we open South Boston Catholic Academy next Fall,” he said.

A resident of Milton, Carr is a 1980 graduate of the University of Massachusetts with a degree in Elementary education. Principal at St. Brigid School since 2007, she successfully implemented several programs at the school, including a self-funded extended day program, strengthened the Spanish curriculum and supported professional development of faculty. Previously she taught 4th grade at St. Mark’s School in Dorchester and served in the Milton school system.

Mary Grassa O’Neill, Superintendent for Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Boston welcomed Carr saying that she brings “great energy, the respect of her peers and a solid track record of accomplishment to this position.”

Currently, over 300 students are registered for the next academic year.
