Father Murphy returns to public ministry

BRIGHTON — The Archdiocese of Boston announced April 11 that Father Charles J. Murphy has been returned to public ministry.

In August 2004, Father Murphy was placed on administrative leave following the receipt of allegations of sexual abuse of a minor. The archdiocese initiated an investigation into the alleged incidents and, after careful review of the information collected, the archdiocesan review board found that the claims were unsubstantiated. Based upon the recommendation of the board, Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley has lifted all restrictions on Father Murphy’s exercise of ministry, effective immediately. Father Murphy will return to his assignment at St. Francis Xavier, Weymouth.

In making today’s announcement, Cardinal O’Malley expressed his continued commitment to the ongoing work of creating safe environments in our churches and schools and providing support to survivors and all people who have suffered as a result of clergy sexual abuse. The cardinal also reiterated his pledge to resolve cases as expeditiously as possible, in a manner that is just for all parties concerned.
