LAWRENCE — Holy Trinity School in Lawrence, part of Corpus Christi Parish, announced that the school will close at the end of the current academic year, according to a statement issued Jan. 30.

Father Thomas S. Domurat, Corpus Christi’s pastor, said the decision was made because of “decreasing enrollment, the inability of the Corpus Christi Parish to support the school, and the inability of the archdiocese to continue to subsidize the school.”

The school’s principal, Laurice Hajjar, will assist families in finding placement for their children in other Catholic schools, and the archdiocesan School Office will help any staff members who seek to continue their work in Catholic education.

“While Holy Trinity must close it’s doors, the mission of Catholic education continues in the city of Lawrence. We hope that the students and families of Holy Trinity School will find a home in the remaining Catholic Schools of the city,” the statement said.

“Change is always difficult,” the statement continued. “It is especially painful when it involves a school that is loved by so many and is being served by dedicated teachers, principal and support staff.”

Holy Trinity School was built in 1915 to serve the children of Polish immigrants. Because of changing demographics in Lawrence, the school has provided Catholic education to children of various ethnicities. The school was staffed by the Franciscan Sisters until 1995.
