Boston College High School head football coach Jim Cotter, now in his 41st season with the Eagles, recently announced his decision to retire as coach effective at the end of this season. Cotter, 67, of Quincy, is a 1955 graduate of the school and has coached over 1,000 players since he began in 1961. He was named head coach in 1964 and has had 35 winning seasons, including 14 in a row from 1965 to 1989. His team won the Division Super Bowl Championship in 1977 and 2000. Cotter said he has considered retiring for over two years, and hopes to focus more time reconnecting alumni with the school. “I’ve been privileged to work with many extremely talented coaches and players in my years,” he said. “My decision comes after a long, thoughtful process and with full confidence in the team’s efforts. I am focused on finishing a strong season.” Cotter was recently named Special Assistant to the President to aid alumni outreach and networking efforts. School administrators are planning a tribute to Cotter at the last home game of the season, on Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. against St. John’s Prep, the details of which are not yet available.
