The movie ‘Therese,’ a film depicting the life of St. Therese of Lisieux, will premier in Boston area on Oct. 22.

The film will show in three Greater Boston theaters: Lowes Copley Place in Boston, Lowes Liberty Tree Mall in Danvers and Lowes at the Loop in Methuen.

In the months prior to the film’s limited release date on Oct. 1 the production company, Luke Films of Portland, Ore., kept a database of figures from mailed petition forms and registration forms filled out online at www.theresemovie.com. The film was chosen to debut in the areas with the highest level of response.

The movie originally opened in 32 theaters in 14 states, grossing more than $350,000 during its first weekend and ranking it fourth in per-location average among all 190 films playing around the country that weekend, Luke Films announced in a news release.

It played in Chicago, Denver, New York City, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Las Vegas and Portland along with areas in California and Texas, but Boston was not on the list.

“Boston’s numbers were not very high originally,” said Ashley Macomber, a spokesperson for Luke Films.

But Bostonians went to the website and sent in forms, expressing their interest in the film. When the interest level increased, Luke Films decided to release the film in Boston, said Macomber.
