2017 Catholic high school graduations
As the school year comes to an end, The Pilot congratulates all the members of the class of 2017 who graduated from Catholic high schools within the Archdiocese of Boston. This year's roundup of commencement exercises is presented alphabetically by school.
Academy of Notre Dame, Tyngsboro
The 163rd graduation took place on Saturday morning, June 3 on the grounds of the school. The salutatory address was presented by Priya Kumari and the valedictory by Amaya Murguia. Susan Turkovich, a past member of the faculty addressed the graduates. Diplomas were presented to 34 graduates.
Archbishop Williams, Braintree
The 65th commencement took place on Thursday evening, May 24 in the school assembly hall. Camden Castagna-McLeod delivered the salutatory address and Michael Matthews, the valedictory. An invited speaker was 1967 graduate Stephen Hassell. Principal Michael Volonnino presented diplomas to 124 graduates.
Arlington Catholic High School
Commencement took place on Thursday afternoon, May 25 at Bentley University in Waltham. The salutatorian address was presented by Nicole Angelakis and the valedictory by Jane Wakefield. The commencement speaker was 1996 graduate Lisa Hickey Simmons. Principal Linda Butt presented diplomas to 140 graduates.
Austin Prep, Reading
The 51st commencement took place on the grounds of the school on Saturday afternoon, May 20. Jasmine Joseph delivered the salutatory address and Timothy Cray, the valedictory. An invited speaker was 1967 graduate Richard J. Meelia. Diplomas were presented to 131 graduates.
Bishop Fenwick High School, Peabody
On the grounds of the football stadium, the 55th commencement took place on Friday evening, May 20. The salutatory address was presented by Megan Costa and the valedictory by Sarah Arnold. Two graduates, Cassidy Woods and Derek Dellisola were presented with the Bishop Fenwick Award. The graduates and staff paid tribute to Sister Geraldine Burns, retiring after 43 years at the school. Vice-principal since 1985, she was presented with a framed papal blessing. Diplomas were presented to 142 graduates.
Boston College High School
The 153rd commencement took place on Sunday afternoon, May 21 in McNeice Pavilion. An invited speaker was graduate Patrick B. Downes '01. He and his wife survived serious injuries at the Boston marathon bombing in April 2013. The salutatory address was presented by Colin E. Carroll and the valedictory by Nicholas Sommer. Diplomas were presented to 303 graduates. Members of the class of 1967 attended and were presented golden jubilee diplomas.
Cathedral High School, Boston
St. James Church in Chinatown was the setting for the 87th commencement on Saturday morning, May 20. Several graduates from the class of 1967 attended and were presented with golden jubilee diplomas. Daniel Janowiec delivered the salutatory address and Amberose McDonald, the valedictory. Dr. Oscar Santos, head of the school presented diplomas to 57 graduates.
Cardinal Spellman High School, Brockton
Rain moved the 56th commencement indoors on Thursday evening, May 25. The salutatorian address was presented by Elizabeth J. Child and the valedictory by Jonathan J. Harris. Also addressing the graduates was class president Emily Kenneally and School President Daniel J. Hodes. Principal Paul G. Kelly presented diplomas to 166 graduates.
Catholic Memorial High School, West Roxbury
The 57th commencement took place on Thursday afternoon, May 25 at Holy Name Church in West Roxbury. The salutatory address was presented by Yucheng Zhang and the valedictory by John E. O'Leary III. Mr. Peter F. Folan, president presented diplomas to 134 graduavtes.
Central Catholic High School, Lawrence
The 79th commencement took place on Thursday evening, May 26 in Memorial Gymnasium. The salutatory address was presented by Margaret Cai and the valedictory by two graduates, Marcella Hayes and Devin Sullivan. Members of the class of 1967 attended and were recognized during the ceremony. School president Christopher Sullivan presented diplomas to 305 graduates.
Cristo Rey Boston, Dorchester
Graduation took place on Saturday, June 10 at Boston College High School. Evelin Morales delivered the salutatory address and Emely Nunez, the valedictory. Dr. Vanessa Calderon-Rosado, CEO of Inquilinos Boricuas en Accion addressed the graduates. Dr. Michael Brennan, president, presented diplomas to 68 graduates.
Fontbonne Academy, Milton
Under a tent erected for the happy occasion and despite the rain, the 50th commencement took place on Thursday evening, May 25. An invited speaker was 1967 graduate Patricia O'Sullivan Steiner. Addressing their classmates as honor speakers was Maeve McDonald and Madison McKenna. Diplomas were presented to 80 graduates.
Malden Catholic High School
The 82nd commencement took place on Saturday, May 20 at the school. Daniel M. Barletta delivered the salutatory address and Max Thomas Doherty, the valedictory. Brother Tom Puccio, principal, presented diplomas to 136 graduates.
Marian High School, Framingham
Commencement took place on Friday evening, May 26. The salutatorian address was presented by Chenxuan Cecilia Gai and the valedictory by Januario Carreiro. Addressing the graduates was Regis College President Antoinette Hayes. Members of the class of 1967 attended and were presented golden jubilee diplomas. Diplomas were presented to 65 graduates.
Matignon High School, Cambridge
The 69th commencement took place on Thursday evening, May 25 in the school assembly hall. The salutatory address was presented by Colleen E. Driscoll. Two students, Gianna L. DeAngelis and Junhan Zeng delivered the valedictory address. Members of the class of 1967 attended and a member of the class, Ms. Rebecca Boylan, addressed the graduates. Principal Joseph DiSarcina presented diplomas to 98 graduates.
Mt. Alvernia High School, Newton
On the front lawn of the school, the 88th commencement took place on Saturday afternoon, May 20. The salutatory address was presented by Elizabeth Ann Cronin and the valedictory by Amanda Maria Pinto McFarland. Ms. Eileen McLaughlin, principal, presented diplomas to 31 graduates.
Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, Newton
The 137th commencement took place on Thursday morning, June 8 under a tent erected for the happy occasion on the grounds of the school. Addressing the graduates was alumna Alexandra Rizio '02. The salutatory address was presented by Madeline Levangie and the salutatory address by Claudia Durbin. Also addressing the graduates as student speaker was Patrice Power. Headmistress Sister Barbara Rogers presented diplomas to 64 graduates.
Notre Dame Academy, Hingham
On the grounds of the school, the 164th commencement took place on Friday evening, May 19. An invited speaker was 2004 graduate and ABC News producer Stephanie Walsh. The valedictory address was presented by Lauren Flynn and the salutatory by Hannah Coulter. Also addressing the graduates as class speaker was Madeline Viola. Diplomas were presented to 120 graduates.
Notre Dame Cristo Rey, Lawrence
Graduation took place on Saturday morning, June 10 at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Lawrence. The salutatory address was presented by Alany Rodriguez-Gonzalez and the valedictory by Hanhnguyen H. Nguyen. Diplomas were presented to 67 graduates.
Pope John XXIII High School, Everett
The 48th commencement took place on Thursday evening, May 25 in the school assembly hall. The salutatory address was presented by Healy Zhuo and the valedictory by Sharice Kayla Nazaire. Addressing the graduates as guest speaker was Dr. Thomas Ryan, former head of the school. Carl DiMaiti, head of the school presented diplomas to 75 graduates.
Presentation of Mary Academy, Methuen
The 56th commencement took place on Friday, May 26 in the Dupre Center. Faith Stewart delivered the salutatory address and Madyson Guidmond, the valedictory. Diplomas were presented to 49 graduates.
Sacred Heart High School, Kingston
Commencement took place on Friday evening, May 26. Two boys, Yanni Pappis and Jake Tibbetts served as co-valedictorians. An invited speaker was 1995 graduate Dana Sacchetti. He is an official with the United Nations Food Programme in Rome. Dr. Michael Gill, principal, presented diplomas to 57 graduates.
St. Clement High School, Medford
The final graduation took place on Friday evening, May 26 at St. Clement Church. The salutatory address was presented by Irene Nguyen and the valedictory by James Cameron. Addressing the graduates was Colin Walsh, a member of the class of 1991 and head football coach. Mr. Douglas Lowe, head of the school, presented diplomas to 21 graduates.
St. John Prep, Danvers
The 107th commencement took place on the grounds of the school on Sunday morning, May 21. The salutatorian address was presented by Andrew Selima and the valedictory by Blake Hekmatpour. Also addressing the graduates as senior class speaker was John Fraser. The distinguished alumni award was presented to the Bishop Robert Reed. The prestigious Xaverian Award for overall excellence was presented to Estarlyn Hiraldo. Headmaster Edward P. Hardiman presented diplomas to 287 graduates.
St. Joseph Preparatory High School, Brighton
The 5th commencement took place on Thursday evening, June 1 at Robsham Theatre at Boston College. The salutatory address was presented by Emily Taranto and the valedictory by Hayley Leger. Addressing the graduates was State Senator Linda Dorcena Forry. Tom Nunan, head of the school presented diplomas to 63 graduates.
St. Mary High School, Lynn
Commencement took place on Thursday evening, May 25 at Lynn Memorial Auditorium. The salutatory address was presented by Katie Cadigan and the valedictory by Michael Cerulli. An invited speaker was 1967 graduate John J. Green. Grace Cotter Regan, head of the school, presented diplomas to 84 graduates.
St. Sebastian's School, Needham
The 73rd commencement took place on Friday morning, June 9 at St. Bartholomew Church in Needham. The salutatorian address was presented by Richard P. Gallo and the valedictory by Andrew M. Elcock. Bishop Robert Reed addressed the graduates. Headmaster William P. Burke presented diplomas to 67 graduates.
Ursuline Academy, Dedham
Graduation took place on Sunday, June 5 on the grounds of the school. The salutatory address was presented by Alexandra Rota and the valedictory by Carine Hajjar. Addressing the graduates was Regina Sullivan '78. Diplomas were presented to 61 graduates.
Xaverian Brothers High School, Westwood
The 50th commencement took place on Friday evening, May 19 on the grounds of the football stadium. Graduates from the first class to graduate in 1967 led off the procession as members of the faculty applauded. The salutatory address was presented by Jackson J. Kelley and the valedictory by Hariharan Shanmugam. The prestigious Xaverian Award for overall academic excellence was presented to Timothy Simoes. Brother Dan Skala, headmaster, presented diplomas to 174 graduates.
