Sacred Heart, Roslindale receives national innovation award
"Today's Catholic Teacher" magazine has selected Sacred Heart School in Roslindale for a national Innovation in Catholic Education Award in the category Innovative Program in Curriculum and Instruction.
Using STREAM (science, technology, religion, engineering, the arts and mathematics) concepts in the Little Builders, Sprouting Engineers Preschool/Child Care program, Sacred Heart School transformed a well-loved story into a unique way to teach children in the Little Builders, Sprouting Engineers program.
The story of the three little pigs is a familiar one of how three little pigs build houses using different materials but two of the three cannot withstand the huffing and puffing of a Big, Bad Wolf.
Integrating the acronym of STREAM, scholars are taught the story in a new way. Science encompasses the water cycle and how to use all five senses. Technology was used as the scholars employed iPads to view house construction videos. Religion came into play because the students discussed Mark 6:45-52 (the story of Jesus walking on water). Engineering principals were used to investigate building design. Through art, the students created wind socks and illustrated the water cycle, and lastly math skills helped students create graphs of findings and measurements.
