The Marist Brothers of the Schools
We are an international community of more than 3,000 Catholic Brothers dedicated to making Jesus known and loved through the education of young people, especially those most neglected. Marist Brothers are educators, counselors, spiritual directors, social workers, youth leaders and missionaries. Every day we aspire to influence and transform the lives and situations of thousands of young people through education and spirituality, challenging young people to live their fullest potential in Christ.
While most of the Brothers minister in school settings, others work with young people in parishes, religious retreats and spiritual accompaniment, at-risk youth settings, young adult ministry and overseas missions.
In the United States Province there are more than 150 Brothers who live in 32 communities in eight states. Marist Brothers strive to make a difference in the world by showing young people that they are loved, safe and cared for.
The Marist Brothers continue to be inspired by St. Marcellin Champagnat (1789-1840), a young French priest who founded the order in 1817 to combat the illiteracy and spiritual poverty in post-Revolutionary France. Marcellin believed God called him to help young people, especially those in need. He responded by forming a religious community of Brothers dedicated to educating youth and conveying the love of Jesus Christ through Mary.
We begin ministering in the Archdiocese of Boston in 1892. During that we year, we opened two elementary schools: St. Joseph in Lowell and St. Anne in Lawrence. Today we sponsor Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, a diverse co-educational college-preparatory secondary school.
Nationally we also sponsor these schools in their respective arch/dioceses: Archbishop Molloy High School, Brianwood, N.Y. (Brooklyn); Marist High, Bayonne, N.J. (Newark); Marist High, Chicago, Ill. (Chicago); St. Joseph Academy, Brownsville, Texas (Brownsville); Mount St. Michael Academy, Bronx, N.Y. (New York) and Christopher Columbus High School, Miami, Fla. (Miami).
Every day, we do our part to build God's kingdom. With Mary, we trust in the work of the Spirit so that we will be able to take the risks necessary to ensure that everyone will come to know God's love!
