Parishes raise over $800K for Typhoon Haiyan relief
In response to the damaging impact to people and areas affected by Typhoon Haiyan, the Archdiocese of Boston announced Jan. 8 that $819,000 has been raised through parish collections to aid in the relief efforts. The collection was taken the weekend of Nov. 16-17, 2013 and reflects the amount raised to date from 237 of the 288 parishes in the Archdiocese of Boston.
Cardinal Seán P. O'Malley said, "we are blessed by a very generous Catholic family in the Archdiocese of Boston. Too often we see these tragedies that are overpowering to the imagination in terms of the human suffering. We pray for continued healing as the people of the Philippines and Vietnam recover from this devastating storm."
These funds are remitted to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) for both the immediate and long-term humanitarian needs and the rebuilding of the areas affected by Typhoon Haiyan.
