Obituary: Father Paul L. Clougherty, 80
Father Paul L. Clougherty passed to the Lord Jan. 13 at Marian Manor in South Boston. He was 80 years old.
Born Nov. 10, 1932 in Manchester, N.H., he was the son of John F. and Mary A. (King) Clougherty. He was the twin brother of the late Donald F. Clougherty.
He graduated from Boston English High School in 1950 and Boston College in 1954. He went on to enter St. John's Seminary and was ordained in Feb. 2, 1960 at Holy Name Church in West Roxbury by Bishop Thomas J. Riley.
Father Clougherty's first assignment following ordination was as assistant pastor at St. John Church, North Chelmsford, where he served from 1960-1965. He went on to serve as assistant pastor at Incarnation Parish, Melrose (1965-1972); St. Michael Church, Lowell (1972-1974); and Sacred Heart Church, Roslindale (1976-1983).
During this time, Father Clougherty also served as chaplain of Pope John XXIII High School in Everett and later taught religion at Catholic Memorial High School in West Roxbury.
In October 1983, Father Clougherty was named administrator of St. Ambrose Church, Dorchester and went on to be named pastor of the parish on Jan. 1, 1985.
In December 1990, he received his last parish assignment as pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Holbrook, where he served until he was granted senior priest/retirement status Nov. 10, 1997.
In retirement Father Clougherty resided in Clearwater, Fla., where he assisted at Espiritu Santo Parish in the neighboring community of Safety Harbor, Fla. He also served as Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus, Barney Gonyea Council #7109, in Safety Harbor, and as chaplain of the Clearwater Chapter of the Italian-American Society.
In 2012 returned to Boston and entered Marian Manor, where he resided until his death.
His funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 18 at St. Theresa Church in West Roxbury. Bishop Robert Hennessey served as the principal celebrant and Bishop Francis Irwin was the homilist. Designated concelebrants included Msgr. Peter T. Martochio, Father Henry P. Boivin, Father Daniel J. Finn and Father Paul G. McPartland.
Interment was at St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury.
