Opera about slain nun comes to Boston
This month, the Boston Metro Opera will present "Angel of the Amazon," an opera by Evan Mack. This opera portrays the life and death of Sister Dorothy Stang, a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur.
Hired gunmen murdered Sister Dorothy while she was walking along a dirt road in Anapu, Para, Brazil in February 2005. A native of Dayton, Ohio, Sister Dorothy had served the people of Brazil for almost forty years.
At the time of her death, she was working with the Project for Sustainable Development, a government initiative created through Brazil's national institute for agrarian reform. This government project grants land for farms to landless families, for the benefit of sustainable farming systems in Brazil. Ranchers, attempting to appropriate this land, ordered hired assassins to kill Sister Dorothy.
The Boston Metro Opera will present "Angel of the Amazon" at Hope Central Church in Jamaica Plain on the evenings of Oct. 21-22 and Oct. 28-29, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 per patron. They are available for purchase at the door and online at www.bostonmetroopera.com/angel-of-the-amazon.html.
