Bishop Richard Lennon, Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese, has announced the appointment of Father Brian Mahoney from Priest Pursuing High Studies to director of the Office for Worship of the archdiocese. The effective date of the new assignment was July 1, 2003.

Father Mahoney was born in Brighton and his family now lives in Hudson. He completed formation for the priesthood at St. John Seminary and was ordained in May 1995 by Cardinal Law at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross.

St. John the Evangelist Parish in Wellesley was his first assignment following ordination. In June 2000 he was assigned, again as parochial vicar, to St. Joseph Parish in Medway. One year later he began pursuing graduate work in liturgical studies.

Among Father Mahoney’s responsibilities in the Office for Worship will be the ongoing formation of the faithful — lay and clergy — of the archdiocese in the liturgical life of the Church. The Second Vatican Council stressed the importance of the beauty and dignity of the liturgy and asked that diocesan bishops see to the growth in the faith of their people by assuring noble simplicity in liturgical actions. A great challenge still remains — that of ensuring the full, active and conscious participation of all in the liturgical life of the Church.

Father Mahoney’s appointment is testimony to the traditional involvement of our archdiocese in the achievement of this goal set out by the Council, and also evidence that much remains to be accomplished in the continuing formation of all of us in this local Church under his leadership in this significant office.
