Pope names 2 new bishops for Boston
BRAINTREE -- The Holy See has appointed two auxiliary bishops for the Archdiocese of Boston while accepting the resignation of another for age reasons.
The Vatican announced today that Fathers Arthur L. Kennedy and Peter J. Uglietto have been raised to the rank of bishop. A press conference announcing the new appointments is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at the Pastoral Center in Braintree.
Pope Benedict XVI has also accepted the resignation of Bishop Emilio Allué. Bishop Allué, 75, most recently served as the archdiocese's Vicar for Hispanic Affairs.
Bishops-elect Kennedy, 68, and Uglietto, 58, will become the 34th and 35th auxiliary bishops of Boston, respectively, at their ordinations. Both are tentatively scheduled to be ordained on Sept. 14 at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross.
Bishop-elect Kennedy is expected to remain at his current post as rector of St. John's Seminary in Brighton for the foreseeable future.
Bishop-elect Kennedy was ordained in 1966. He received his Licentiate of Sacred Theology in 1967 from the Pontifical Gregorian University and a Ph.D. from Boston University in 1978.
After service in various parishes in the Archdiocese of Boston, he held faculty positions at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota, St. John's Seminary College and the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas. From 1993 to 1998, he was director of the Master of Arts in theology at the archdiocesan seminary in St. Paul.
During his career, he was executive director of the USCCB's Secretariat for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs.
Bishop-elect Uglietto, currently the rector of Blessed John XXIII National Seminary, will become regional bishop of the archdiocese's north region. He will succeed Father John Mulloy, the current interim regional vicar. Bishop-elect Uglietto will be replaced at the seminary by its current dean, Father William Palardy.
He will be the second auxiliary bishop of Italian-American heritage in the 202-year history of the archdiocese.
Additionally, Bishop-elect Uglietto has been named titular bishop of Thubursicum, in present-day Algeria.
Bishop-elect Uglietto was ordained a priest in 1977 and holds a Licentiate of Sacred Theology and Doctorate of Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome.
Bishop Allué was born in Spain in 1935. He served in several Salesian provincial assignments in New York, New Jersey, and Florida from the 1970's to the 90's. He was an auxiliary bishop in Boston since 1996, where he has served as regional bishop of the west and Merrimack regions, and most recently the Hispanic apostolate vicar.
