Catholic schools bring home championships
The winter school athletic season has ended with three Catholic high schools taking home state titles.
In basketball, the Central Catholic boys competed for a division state title at the DCU Center in Worcester March 14. They defeated St. John in Shrewsbury 56-55 and ended the season at 26-1.
Earlier that week, Cathedral High’s boys competed for a Division 4 state title at the TD Banknorth Garden, losing to New Mission 75-47. Coached by Carnell Suttles, Cathedral had a great season capturing the Division 4/south title, ending the season at 19-6. In addition, Archbishop Williams’ girls captured the Division 3/south title and the Catholic Memorial boys captured the Catholic Conference Title.
In hockey, the Arlington Catholic boys’ team captured the Division 1 state title on March 14 at the TD Banknorth Garden. The Cougars defeated Archbishop Williams 5-0 and end the season at 15-7-4. Despite the loss, the Archies from Braintree had a great season too, ending at 16-6-2.
In the evening, St. Mary’s girls from Lynn repeated as Division 1 state champs with a 7-2 win over Woburn. The state title is the third in a row with an undefeated season. The Spartans end at 25-0-1.
The Fontbonne girls from Milton competed against Winchester for a Division 2 title but lost the game 2-0. Nevertheless, the Ducks had a great season, ending at 15-4-2. The Catholic Memorial Knights, perennial contenders in the super 8 championship, lost to Hingham in the evening, 1-0, in a hard fought game. The Knights, Catholic Conference Champs, end at 18-4-1.
