Father John Mulloy named Interim Regional Vicar in North Region
An archdiocesan priest with wide experience in numerous parish and administrative positions has been named as the Interim Regional Vicar of the North Region of the archdiocese. Father John Mulloy will serve in that position until a new auxiliary bishop is named for the archdiocese according to Cardinal O’Malley’s intentions, as regional bishop in the North Region.
Father Mulloy was born in Boston and raised in Wakefield. He attended local schools in Malden and Wakefield and was graduated from Malden Catholic High School. He entered the archdiocesan seminary system and attended Cardinal O’Connell Seminary, Jamaica Plain; St. Clement Hall and St. John’s, both in Brighton.
Bishop Jeremiah Minihan ordained him to the priesthood at Holy Cross Cathedral on May 23, 1970. Between then and October 1984 he was an assistant or an associate at St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, Andover, St. Patrick Parish, Roxbury, then administrator of the Roxbury parish; and parochial vicar at St. Patrick Parish, Brockton.
With the reorganization of the archdiocese early in Archbishop Law’s tenure, Father Mulloy was named the Secretary for Pastoral Services, coordinating and overseeing a host of archdiocesan agencies, programs and offices. During these years he lived at St. Patrick, Brockton and at St. Peter, Dorchester.
He returned full time to parish ministry in1988 when he was named a parochial vicar at St. Michael Parish, North Andover. Cardinal Law named him pastor of St. Michael Parish, Hudson on May 7, 1991 and as pastor of Blessed Sacrament Parish, Saugus on June 11, 1996. On the completion of his two terms as the pastor in Saugus he was named parochial vicar at St. John the Evangelist, Wellesley (2008-2009) and most recently has been parochial vicar at St. Joseph parish in Malden.
Between his assignments at Roxbury and Brockton he was granted a sabbatical and took the Priestly Renewal Program at Rome’s North American College. More recently he has participated in the Good Leaders, Good Shepherds Program.
As his appointment indicates he will remain as part time parochial vicar at St. Joseph, Malden while he assumes the interim leadership of the North Region. This new appointment was effective on Oct. 20, 2009.
Father Mulloy’s great wealth of experience as well as the confidence he enjoys among many priests mean that the North Region will have competent pastoral guidance during this interim period.
