Obituary: Sister Michael of Christ the King, OCD, well-known Carmelite nun
Sister Michael of Christ the King (Elaine) Crimmins, beloved Carmelite nun of the former Discalced Carmelite Monastery in Danvers, died on March 1, following a period of declining health at St. Joseph Manor in Brockton. Sister Michael's life was one of silence, solitude, work, and deep prayer for the Church and the world: a life lived for 59 years at Danvers Carmel.
The daughter of the late Francis and Helen M. (Willis) Crimmins, she was born in Norwood on January 29, 1943. She attended St. Mary School in Stoughton, Fontbonne Academy in Milton, graduating in 1960, and graduated from Emmanuel College in Boston in 1964. She touched countless teachers and classmates from St. Mary, Fontbonne, and Emmanuel, who were among the throngs who attended Sister Michael's Silver Anniversary in 1991 at Danvers Carmel. Her contemplative life did not stop her from affecting anyone with whom she came in contact.
Elaine's calling to live a contemplative life began after her eighth-grade teacher, Sister Maris, CSJ, gave her a book about St. Therese of the Child Jesus (St. Therese of Lisieux).
Following her college graduation, she volunteered in Arequipa, Peru, as a lay apostle, helping the poor to improve their lives.
She entered Danvers Carmel on Feb. 13, 1966, and received the Carmelite habit the following year.
She was well known across the St. Teresa Association, an association consisting of 12 Carmel monasteries of nuns throughout North America, serving as its coordinator from 2003 to 2009.
She served with generosity and love. She will be sorely missed by her sisters in Carmel, her family, the friends of Carmel from the North Shore community, and many who knew her as a dear and loving friend.
In addition to her Carmelite sisters, Sister Michael is survived by her siblings: Michael, Plymouth; Kathleen M. Swanson, Francis and Barry, all of Stoughton.
Sister Michael's funeral Mass of Burial was celebrated on March 8, 2025, at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton. She was buried in the Danvers Carmelite Cemetery, Danvers. [Ed. -- C.R. Lyons Funeral Home, Danvers, contributed to this obituary.]
