Mass to mark Daughters of St. Paul jubilee

JAMAICA PLAIN -- Sister Catherine Bernadette, FSP, superior of the Daughters of St. Paul’s American Motherhouse recently announced the order’s plans for the local celebration of their 75th anniversary in the United States.

“We wanted to have an event where we could invite all the many friends and benefactors who have played such a significant role in our community’s life throughout the years. After considering several possibilities, we decided on a Mass at a local parish, so there would be room for everyone to attend,” said Sister Catherine.

“Boston is the hub for our apostolic activities and the home of our publishing house, Pauline Books & Media so it’s fitting that we celebrate this significant anniversary with a public event,” she added.

The Daughters have been in the Boston Archdiocese since January 1953 when they opened a small convent on what was then Greenleaf Street, now part of the Northeastern University’s campus.

The first American foundation by the Daughters was started by Mother Paula Cordero in New York City on June 28, 1932.

Since then countless people have been visited by the sisters either in their homes or places of work. Many children have benefited from their mission through book fairs in schools. With tables and racks filled with their publications, the Daughters of St. Paul are a welcome sight at catechetical, teacher and other conferences. More recently, they have begun to present media seminars, host movie discussion nights, and give multi-media presentations and retreats.

Although the ways the sisters communicate has changed through the years, their mission still remains the same: To live and give Jesus Christ to their brothers and sisters using all forms of media.

The anniversary Mass will be celebrated by Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley on Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. at St. Theresa Parish in West Roxbury. A reception will follow. Further information can be obtained by calling 617-522-8911.
