First class of permanent deacons marks 30th anniversary

WESTWOOD — As the 2006 class of permanent deacons prepares for ordination on Sept. 9, the Archdiocese of Boston’s first permanent deacons observed the 30th anniversary of their own ordinations.

The 17 members of the first class who are still living gathered earlier this year for a Mass at St. Denis Parish in Westwood on the date of their ordination, May 22.

“It was only through a most gracious and benevolent God that this historic event was possible,” said Deacon Joseph L. Delaney, a member of the 1976 class and deacon at St. Denis.

Wives of the deceased deacons who were available also attended the Mass, which was celebrated by the first permanent deacon program director, Father William Burckhart. The Mass was concelebrated by Father Joseph Gaudet and Deacons Delaney and Robert W. Alence.
