Neighbors Who Care receives Cummings Foundation grant

Neighbors Who Care is one of 100 local nonprofits to receive grants of $100,000 each through Cummings Foundation's $100K for 100 program. The Waltham-based organization was chosen from a total of 549 applicants, during a competitive review process.

Neighbors Who Care was founded in 2003 by Sister Dorothy Cooper of the Sisters of Charity of Montreal, headquartered in Lexington, to match lonely/isolated elders in the greater Waltham communities (including Arlington, Lexington, Watertown, Newton) with a companion volunteer.

"We serve those elders who may have outlived family, friends and often neighbors and become isolated and often depressed and do not know where to turn for help," said Sister Dorothy. "We match a volunteer companion with an elder to walk this part of the journey with that person. Volunteers will go for a walk, out for coffee, play scrabble and anything a friend might do for another friend.

"We offer our services at no charge as most of our clients are either house poor or are living only on Social Security. That is why it is such a blessing to receive the Cummings Foundation Grant."
